Autism affects more than 2 million people in the U.S., and statistics show that the prevalence has grown in recent years. At PROaupair, approximately 70% of our host families have children with special needs, the majority being on the autism spectrum.
In 2008 (updated in 2011), Autism Speaks, an organization dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families, created the “100 day Kit for Newly Diagnosed Families of Young Children.” The kit was created specifically for families with children ages 4 and under to help guide them during the first 100 days following an autism diagnosis.
The 100+ page kit is free to download online and includes sections such as “Causes and Symptoms,” “How is Autism Treated,” “Getting Your Child Services,” and “A Week by Week Plan for the Next 100 Days.”
